* Burning witches is a very old and still alive folk custom. It takes place on the night of April 30th to May 1st. On this night, people gather around lit fires, which were supposed to protect them from evil forces and sanctify the harvest, and celebrate the arrival of spring. The fires were also supposed to symbolically burn everything old and make way for the new that spring would bring. Only later did the celebrations become associated with the specific figure of a witch and her burning, as it was believed that witches had a gathering on this very evening.
